Bolsonaro wants to leave the United States as soon as possible, which irritates Biden.
Following his supporters’ brazen attack on Brazil’s capital over the weekend, the Biden administration is under increasing pressure from leftists in Latin America as well as US lawmakers to expel Jair Bolsonaro from a post-presidential retreat in Florida.
However, the far-right ex-president may have thwarted any plans for such a stinging rebuke. He told a Brazilian media outlet on Tuesday that he would delay his return home, which was originally scheduled for late January, after being hospitalized with abdominal pains related to a 2018 stabbing.
“I came to spend some time away from my family, but these were not calm days,” Bolsonaro said to CNN’s Brazilian Portuguese-language affiliate. “First, there was this tragic incident in Brazil, followed by my hospitalization.”
Bolsonaro arrived in Florida in late December, skipping the Jan. 1 swearing-in of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who became the first elected Brazilian president since democracy was restored in the 1980s to not receive the presidential sash from his predecessor. Bolsonaro is reportedly staying at the Orlando home of Brazilian MMA fighter Jose Aldo, a staunch supporter.
His visit to Florida went mostly unnoticed in the United States until Sunday’s attack by thousands of ardent supporters who had been camping for weeks outside a military base in Brasilia, refusing to accept Bolsonaro’s narrow defeat in an October runoff. Their assault on Brazil’s congress and presidential palace left shattered glass, smashed computers, and slashed artwork in their wake.

Democrats have been concerned about Bolsonaro’s continued presence on U.S. soil almost since the images of destruction were broadcast to the world, drawing parallels between the rampage in Brazil and the Jan. 6, 2020, insurgency by Donald Trump’s allies who stormed the Capitol to try to overturn the U.S. presidential election results.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was among those calling on President Joe Biden to fire Bolsonaro.
“Nearly two years after the attack on the United States Capitol by fascists, we see fascist movements abroad attempting to do the same in Brazil,” the New York City lawmaker said. “The United States must stop granting Bolsonaro asylum in Florida.”
